From my earliest recollections, a camera has been a constant companion on my explorations – accompanying my father on numerous adventures across the country to capture the allure of trains through the lens.
I am a biokineticist by trade, with a practice in Potchefstroom, with a special interest in cardiopulmonary and cardiac conditions.
In 2016 I successfully attained an Honours degree in Biokinetics, a milestone that paved the way for the establishment and management of my own biokinetics practice in Potchefstroom. The pursuit of my professional career, however, did not preclude the discovery of a newfound passion for photography, a revelation that unfolded during my participation in a beginners' photographic course at DPC (Digital Photography Courses) in 2019, under the guidance of the esteemed Danie Bester. This transformative course marked a pivotal moment, propelling me into the captivating world of photography.
Since that seminal experience, my commitment to refining my craft has led me through a series of advanced courses with DPC, encompassing topics such as Advanced Photography and the nuanced art of 'Developing a Personal Style.'
My photographic odyssey is distinguished by a unique focus on trains and landscapes within the enchanting Southern African terrain. Over the past decade, my lens has captured the intricate dance between railways and the picturesque landscapes they traverse. From the rhythmic movement of heavy freight trains destined for our ports to the vibrant passenger sets traversing between cities, South Africa's railways offer a visual spectacle. Particular intrigue lies in the Heritage Operators scattered throughout South Africa, occasionally breathing life into the past with the majestic presence of steam locomotives. These glimpses into history are moments I treasure.
In 2021, I co-founded Stimela Photographic Events (SPE) - now Simply Stimela Events (SE) - a collective of creatives dedicated to spotlighting and supporting South Africa's railway heritage and operating companies through meticulously curated photographic events. Collaborating with renowned operators such as Wonder Steam Trains, Ceres Rail Company, and Rovos Rail, SE has orchestrated several successful events to date.
My journey in photography is an ongoing pursuit of knowledge and enjoyment, as I continue to learn, grow, and capture the timeless beauty of South Africa's railway heritage.
